The story of a family with eight very independent children,
ages 8 to 23 when the series began. Tom, the father, was a
newspaper columnist for the Sacramento, California, Register.
Joan was his wife of 25 years. The death of actress Diana
Hyland after only filming four episodes, forced major changes
in the show. For the remainder of the first season she was
simply described as being "away." At the start of season two
Tom had become a widower, his wife having died about a year
ago. He soon found romance in the person of Abby, a pretty
schoolteacher who had come to the Bradford home to tutor one
of the children. Their romance blossomed, and they were
married in a special two hour episode on November 9, 1977.
Story lines followed the trials and tribulations
of the large Bradford clan.
