Ross Bagdasarian, after several years as a struggling actor and
musician, had a huge success with the 1958 novelty record "The
Chipmunk Song," which sold over four million copies in just seven
weeks. Subsequent success with Chipmunk albums and singles
eventually resulted in this primetime animated series. Bagdasarian
was the voice of three chipmunks: Alvin, an aggressive, ambitious,
impulsive, and often foolish little fellow and his more conservative
brothers Simon and Theodore. Bagdasarian was also the voice of
the animated David Seville, in whose home Alvin and his brothers lived.
In addition to stories about their relationship and one or two
musical numbers, each episode included an adventure of
Clyde Crashcup, a nutty inventor who took credit for
inventing anything and everything, even when he didn't.

Alvin & the Chipmunks focused on three Chipmunk brothers
living with and adopted by Dave Seville. Each episode found
them getting into trouble of some sort. In the years since this show
ended, several big-screen versions have been in theaters.
