This gentle family drama was a television breakthrough,
the first series built around a character who was mentally
handicapped. Charles Thatcher was certainly intelligent, but
because of his affliction with Down Syndrome, he was just
entering Marshall High School at age 18, "mainstreaming"
after years of special education classes. There Corky (as he
was nicknamed) would be a classmate of his younger sister
Becca, who was torn between her sense of responsibility
for her brother and her own need to fit in. Corky's loving
parents were Drew, a former construction worker who
opened his own restaurant, the Glenbrook Grill; and Libby, a
former singer who alternated between a career in advertising
and raising a family. In 1991 Libby, at age 40, had a third
child, a baby boy. Paige was Drew's troubled daughter
from a previous marriage, a college dropout who
returned to live with him when her relationship failed.
