After being fired from the WJM-TV news staff in Minneapolis,
Lou Grant moved to Los Angeles and got a job as city editor
of the Los Angeles Tribune, a crusading newspaper under the
autocratic rule of its owner-publisher, Margaret Pynchon.
Though he officially worked for managing editor Charlie
Hume, an old friend, Lou often found himself in a battle
of wills with the widowed Mrs. Pynchon. Despite the
fireworks that usually erupted when they disagreed, there
was an underlying mutual respect between them. Other
principals included Joe Rossi, the hotshot, talented
young investigative reporter; Billie Newman, an ambitious
young reporter; Art Donovan, the assistant city editor;
and Animal, the staff photographer.
